Joseph Meissonnier was a Provence and South of France painter. He was a member of the Group of Thirteen created in 1912 by Clément-Brun with Joseph Hurard. He was trained by Pierre Grivolas, Eugène Dufour and Paul Saïn.
Meissonnier describes here the port of Martigues and the fishermen activity in the beginning of the 20th century. He uses a post-impressionist technique with a lot of substance and lots of gestures.
